The Indictments Against Advertising

samyfern December 8th, 2007

When the author brings up the stereotypes of advertisements he quotes a feminist that states that advertising “spews out images of women as sex mates, housekeepers, mothers, and menial workers.” However, men are often times portrayed as sex mates as well. In many magazines one can find multiple advertisements showing a man with his shirt off, and that ad is definitely directed towards women. The only difference is that men don’t find this offensive. Also, most women don’t find it offensive to be portrayed as mothers. When has it ever been offensive to be seen as a good mother? Often times baking commercials show a mother and her child making the desert together, which draws a sense of family values. This is by far not a negative aspect of advertising. As for the idea that women are portrayed as housekeepers, this is because it is often times true. Advertisements aren’t being falsely stereotypical but rather are generalizing. Most of the time housekeepers are women. They aren’t saying that all women are housekeepers, but that most housekeepers are women. On top of all of this, women are hardly ever portrayed as menial workers anymore.

Elements of Effective Layout

sduke07 December 7th, 2007

Dorothy Cohen elaborates on the intricacies of advertising. Explaining key concepts such as balance, proportion, movement, simplicity and emphasis.Balance is described as eqaul distribution and propotion is the division of space. The movement provides he directional flow for advertisment. The explanation of the key elements provide readers with adequate information to asses tadvertisements, nespappers, and magazines.

Starting time and school life

sduke07 December 7th, 2007

The time school starts is dependent upon adolescents sleeping patterns. Students need to be aware of whats going on in class, the teachers reported that the students were much more alert during the first two periods of class. The problem with this is that high school students expressed sentiments to leave to attend extracurricular activites. Some students practice times were moved to the morning  which made everything more convienent for the students and the faculty.  Teachers note that when classes start around 7:15am the children are extremely uncoscious and the ;ater start time would be beneficial.

Gay Marriage

didi05 December 7th, 2007

This debate will go on beyond our years. The fact is people just believe different things than others and we all should accept that. Who are we to enforce our beliefs on anyone? That question is for both sides of the spectrum. People are going to do what they feel is right and unless you can make your ideas reasonable to someone else there is no point in even wasting your time on an argument. All we can really do is accept each other as human beings and pray that the opposing side understands the point we’re trying to make.

The Radical Idea of Marrying for Love

didi05 December 7th, 2007

Cynical is the best word that I can come up with to describe this essay. Although many of the ideas within this essay were true in a sense it is still clings too much to the fact that marriage for love is ridiculous. In an era like ours things have changed as far as marriage. It is no longer unreasonable to marry for love because we have the luxuries to do so. What ever someone isn’t they can become in regards to social standing. Part of the reason why it is so hard for some people to find mates these days is because they are looking for that whole package deal. That being, someone who is socially, financially, emotionally, and spiritually in tuned with ones needs. Thus the idea isn’t so radical anymore.

Obscene Election Speech

didi05 December 7th, 2007

This was interesting because I can see where both sides are coming from. It is important for adults to address situations like this one carefully. As an adult you don’t want the younger person to feel that you are being unfair because you have the authority to do so. Although Fraser does have the right to express himself freely as stated in the constitution in a school setting this freedom is limited. The administrators should have taken the time to review what he was going to say before he said it. After the fact it is in a sense unfair to reprimand him for something you neglected to do. Even if it was expressed in the wrong way they didn’t make the effort to prevent so he intern didn’t see the reason to change it. Was he wrong? Yes but they as adults get stuck holding the candle of blame.

What Yale Women Want

didi05 December 7th, 2007

This may have been my absolute favorite reading of them all. I completely agree with the author. If those women of Yale feel that it is realistic to go to school and be solely dependant on a man then they are indeed misguided. One should always prepare themselves for the worst possible circumstances and women especially need to use the skills that they acquire whether it is in school or elsewhere. The point is that if you want to be a house wife that’s fine but if that’s your plan listen up. The competition for getting into a school like Yale is great enough so if you don’t plan on using the skills they’ve provided leave that seat for someone who will. I have nothing against a domestic women but I do have a problem with attending school to find a man to take care of you and squandering one’s education.

A Portfolio of Advertisements

jorgitopm December 7th, 2007

Ads are designed to appeal to the public.  Some ads appeal to sex and gender while others to social status and age.  In “More Doctors Smoke Camels Than Any Other Cigarette,” the advertisers are making you believe that smoking Camels is going to make you feel smarter and it will give you the sensation of belonging to a higher social caste.  The funny thing is that if you actually buy a box of Camels after being seduced by the ad, you will probably succumb to their manipulation since you are predisposed already to feel smarter and richer.  Try it.

The Research Process

jorgitopm December 7th, 2007

Research is very useful in creating new knowledge.  Research is just a way of satisfying the curious nature of humans.  Thanks to research human civilization has made great discoveries and inventions.  These, of course, have propelled humans to take great leaps in the road of knowledge.  I do believe however, that our systematic way of researching is not the best way of doing so.

The Indictments against Advertising

didi05 December 7th, 2007

This piece is a perfect example of the oversensitivity of our society. These critics simply have nothing better to do than criticize and why shouldn’t they it’s their job isn’t it. The fact is people who are so critical of advertisements need to take a step back and evaluate their personal responsibilities. Although it is true that some advertisements are misleading and they play on our emotions and desires, so what? That is what they were made to do. Can you imagine a world where everything on T.V. was a public service announcement? The only problem is when such advertisements manipulate children. As for adults who have the ability to reason logically it’s up to you to not be taken advantage of. Only the strong survive; lead or be lead.

The Research Process

didi05 December 7th, 2007

It is imperative when writing a Paper to do research. Research is important because it provides the reader with the sense of the writer’s credibility.  Another reason why research is important is because it will strengthen what ever idea you as the writer are trying to get across. In order to do good research the writer must use reliable resources.  In researching the writer may find out something that they hadn’t thought about before which is important to the work being done. The writer may also be corrected through researching which is important because one must never assume when writing, always leave room for the fact that you may be wrong.

The Mall As a refuge

didi05 December 7th, 2007

In this generation it is normal for people to go to the mall as a place where you can escape your troubles. That is unless something at the mall is related to your worries. One example is that if you’re broke there is no reason to go to the mall for some people because it will only remind you of the fact that you have no money to buy anything. That is often the case for college students. Contrarily for older people and those in their early teens the mall is a place where you go to socialize and catch up with acquaintances. Either way the mall like anywhere else is a place that someone can use a getaway.

Opinions and Social Pressure

didi05 December 7th, 2007

This reading proves that Society does indeed shape not only ones opinion but also ones actions as well. I recount a story wherein a young woman outside in the streets of New York was being attacked. Although there were people in there apartments who could see the women being attacked no one helped. Her cries for assistance went to know avail because no one saw anyone else trying to help her. She was stabbed several times and the onlookers saw the whole assault. Psychologists believe that this was the perfect example of the influence of the majority. The general definition of a leader is someone who can get people to things that they wouldn’t normally do on their own. It’s a shame that there aren’t many people who will step outside of their comfort in order to make a difference.

Cinderella and Her Siblings

didi05 December 7th, 2007

According to this reading Cinderella was a story based on the relationship between her and her sisters rather than her and the world. It is interesting to experience this take on the story because it is different. Although her sisters’ roles as antagonist in the story are undeniable, I had never felt that they were the leading antagonist. From Bettelheim’s perspective is easy to see how they could take that role. The biblical references to Cain and Able as well as Jacob an Esau make his argument all the more reasonable. Able and Esau are definitely comparable to Cinderella in that they are all the one being oppressed.

Revision vs. Editing

didi05 December 7th, 2007

Definitively speaking revision is the act of actually changing something. People usually edit things before they revise them. Editing is usually done in preparation for revision. It is a matter of the production of quality. In order to produce something of quality one must review their work and make the appropriate changes in accordance with that same appraisal. Scrutiny is important in an effort to compose an exceptional piece.  Generally speaking one must edit before anything can be revised otherwise the revision is virtually worthless. Though one act compliments the other there is indeed a significant difference between the two.

sleep deprivation a common culture

Nat57 December 7th, 2007

For our generation and in our day and time, sleep has been seen as overrated.  In replacement for a good night’s sleep, many teens and young adults have turned to caffeine and pills to keep them awake.  Studies have shown that 16 hours of sustained wakefullness can lead to a BAC level of .05.  Not only is sleep deprivation unhealthy for our bodies and state of mind, it can cause us to impersonate that of a drunk person.  I don’t think that htere can be a cure for this problem, for it has turned into our common culture.  There can only be awareness for this problem and possible wys to prevent this from invading every crevase of our society.

The History of Malls

didi05 December 7th, 2007

It is interesting to find out the way that malls came into existence. Like most American conveniences the mall was apparently a European idea. That definitely explains a lot as far as why Europe has such nicer malls than America. The good thing is that we don’t have to pay to get in like people did in the past. Since then it seems that malls have come a long way. The one thing about the history of malls that isn’t very attractive is the creation of the underground mall. In Atlanta Georgia there is a mall below the ground but as far as I’m concerned it isn’t half as attractive as the one above the ground. Either way we should thank foreign countries like those in Europe for creating the mall.

Philip Zimbardo’s Experiment

didi05 December 7th, 2007

It is unfortunate what happened to those young men during this experiment. Nonetheless the experiment did prove its purpose. It showed the extent of a person’s willingness to obey a portrayed authority figure. So then, can we really chastise the Andrew Meyer’s of the world who don’t readily give in to an authority figure? Should we portray him and those like him as reasonable thinkers, people who won’t just sit down and eat whatever is given to them? No one should stand idly by and accept the role assigned to them by society or an apparent authority. People tend to forget that no one can define you except for you. You are what you believe you are and nothing inside you can be taken form you it is you who has the ability to give it up. These young men should have taken into account the words of William Cowper, “I am the monarch of all I survey my right there is none to dispute…”

The Answer is No

didi05 December 6th, 2007

The question is do students have freedom of speech? As far as I’m concerned all Americans enjoy the luxury of the first amendment as long as you’re not hurting the feelings of anyone important. It is just as the article says; no one has the right to slander, solicit, blackmail, or disclose someone else’s secret. Thus “freedom” of speech has conditions. One can say whatever they want under the condition that they can’t get in trouble for it. If a student in high school can be reprimanded for responding to an adult (even if they don’t use obscene language) then they aren’t really free to speak, are they? On the other hand political officials can practically respond to whom ever they want how ever they want as long as they are not above them in the power tower.

So America’s Youth Needs Sleep…Do Something About It

didi05 December 6th, 2007

The best way to deal with a problem is to solve it. There are so many articles out there about adolescents needing sleep but other than telling us young people to sleep more I see no results. How about this for a solution; get our teachers to cut back on the work load, starting school a little later, setting up napping stations around campus, anything. So often do we find a discussion based on a problem that no one really can or wants to solve. As far as the awareness gap between parents and teens, if we told our parents that we were losing sleep in college, how would that help? In regard to caffeine playing a role in our sleep deprivation; it’s either put an age limit on it like alcohol, or give us more. If everyone’s so worried about the pressures of our lives affecting our sleep they should start passing some legislation to cut the stress down especially in school otherwise you’re writing is in vain.

Ahmadinejad Receives A Warm Welcome To Columbia University

didi05 December 6th, 2007

Who exactly does Columbia University’s President Lee Bollinger think he is? When the president of Iran visited the Columbia University he was berated by none other than the University president himself.  It is irresponsible and uncouth for a professional especially a leader of an institution of higher learning to criticize some one to that extent. Not only did he insult the intelligence of a world leader but he attacked his personal character as well. If there is one thing that Bollinger needs to learn it’s tact. There is a difference between free speech and a blatant display verbal harassment. He needs to understand that a person in his position has certain responsibilities and one of them is to set a good example. It is also important for him to acknowledge the fact that he is a representation not only of Columbia University but also Americans in general. This is not to say that Ahmadinejad is saint; he deserved it but not at the expense of our nations persona. Bollinger could have at least started his sentences with the words “With all dew respect…” it might have made him feel better.

A Third of Life

roseboss December 6th, 2007

It amazes that the average human spends a third of their life sleeping. Though I believe thats not the case for the average American. In the essay A Third of Life, Paul Martin writes about sleep and the lack thereof. He discusses how society is a sleep-sick society because in our society we are so sleep deprived. We’re in a constant active state. Everone’s always trying to get ahead, who has time for sleep when there’s school, work, and parties?

How Sleep Debts Hurts College Students

roseboss December 6th, 2007

I completely agree with this essay. As a college student I am definetely deprived of sleep. Though I know it is imperative to get the recommended 6-8 hours, it is practically impossible. One point made in the essay was that during exam weeks students lack sleep. It seems as though we as students try to cut down on our sleep to pencil more study time. It is a bad habit, but it seems at times the only choice.

Take 2,000 and Call me in the Morning

sduke07 December 6th, 2007

Howie Carr expresses a sort of humorous outake on a new medical disorder called ED. ED is emotional distress, it is commonly used in courtrooms across America. ED has been used in many pecuilar court cases .THe best thing about ED is that is is cured with a bunch of money! ED is easy to posses and even easier to sue someone for. America has found a medical term for anything and people are ceasing the advantage to sue people claiming that their inflicted with ED.I beleve Ed is a product of Americas oversensitivity and utilized when greed is

The Mall as Refuge

roseboss December 6th, 2007

It is agreed that the ideal purpose of the mall is to buy an item(s)but that is not why everone goes there. In The Mallas Refuge, George Lewis classifies two groups-1)the one that goes to the mall and shop and 2)the one that goes to socialize. Within the second group that socializes a subdivisions-1)elderly and 2) teenagers. As a young adult in college I find myself leaning more towards going to the mall just to purchase an item, but I remeber my teenage years the mall was the hang out spot for my friends and I. It was the place where I can release my stress with school and parents.
