The Science of Sleep by Susan Ince
April 2nd, 2008I found this article interesting and informative. I was unaware that insufficient sleep could lead to diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. I also found it interesting that sleepy or drowsy drivers cause about 100,000 car crashes each year. It amazed me when I read that sleep deprivation played a role in the Challenger disaster, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, and the oil spill off of the coast of Alaska. Before reading this article I already knew that were four stages of sleep. This article helped to explain what happens during the stages of sleep. I learned that a person only spends around five minutes in stage 1 sleep, about ten to twenty-five minutes in stage two, and the rest of the night in stages three and four, entering REM (dream) sleep about every ninety minutes. Another interesting fact is that the body tries to repair itself during deep sleep. / s128319
